Pakhawaj Tuning

in Pakhawaj, Tuning

The treble side in pakhawaj is tuned by holding it in vertical position and striking the rim with a tuning hammer. It must be tuned so that the sound matches with the sound of the accompanying tanpura.

The bass side can only be tuned by the application of atta paste. Unlike other percussion instruments, it cannot be tuned by tightening the lacings.

Atta paste is the most preferred for tuning purpose. Sometimes, people use Blue-Tac but after sometime, it is realized that it is even more untidy. It releases oils which is even more difficult to get rid off. Hence atta paste is the best choice for this purpose.
