Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia

One of the Renowned International personality of Bansuri is Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia born on July 1, 1938. He comes from a non musical background since his father was a wrestler and he wanted him to be the same but young Hari had no interest in the same. Although he went to Akhada but it was just to make his father happy. His mother expired only when he was 6. So he was taken care by his father.

He started to secretly learn music at the age of 15 from his neighbour Pandit Raja Ram. Few years later, he heard a flute recital from Pandit Bholenath and he was so impressed that he started learning flute. He got a job in All India Radio, Cuttack at the age of 19 and he performed so well that he was promoted to the Mumbai Headquarters within five years.

After going there, he got additional benefits by performing at India’s Cultural Centers and he also got a chance to work with Shrimati Annapurna Devi, daughter of Ustaad Allauddin Khan of the Maihar School of Music. This was the turning point of his lifetime and he developed a respectable innovated style of Traditional music.

Pandit Chaurasia is one the most renowned musicals and has been awarded with various notable awards such as National Award(1984) by Sangeet Natak Academy, Padma Bhushan(1992) and Padma Vibhushan(2000).

He has composed music for a number of Indian Films along with several Western musicians such as John McLaughlin and Jan Gabarek. He has also gained World acclaim from august audience and fellow musicians such as Yehudi Menuhin and Jean Pierre Rampal.

His Official Biography is named as “Wood-Winds of Change” by Surjit Singh. He was also honoured by the Dutch Royal family at a glittering ceremony at Amsterdam and conferred with a title “Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau” by Princess Maxima Herself.

From the past 15 years or so, he has been imparting knowledge about the Indian Music at Rotterdam Music Conservatory. In accordance to the significant contribution made by him in France and all other world in the field of music, he has honored as KNIGHT IN THE ORDER OF ARTS AND LETTER by the Ministry of France.

He has given remarkable music to some of the hindi films such as “Silsila”, “Chandni”, and “Lamhe” in collaboration with Pandit ShivKumar Sharma and forming a duo known as Shiv-Hari.
