Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma

Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, born on 13th January, 1938 in Jammu is a legendary Santoor player. It is only due to the efforts of Pandit Shiv that Santoor has reached this height. he has gained his knowledge about Santoor from his father as well as teacher, Pandit Uma Dutt Sharma who is a renowned Santoor player and a vocalist of his times.

Santoor was initially known as Shata-Tantri Veena and was used only in one form of singing called Sufiana Mausiqi. The responsibility of taking Santoor to the International level was given to Pandit ShivKumar by his father and he took it so well that Santoor is an Internationally acclaimed instrument these days. ShivKumar took his responsibilities so efficiently that he and Santoor are considered as synonyms these days.

This folk instrument was nicely modified into classical music by Shiv Kumar. The range of octaves was enhanced and it now contains full three octaves which were not present in the earlier versions.

A new method was invented to imitate the human voice by allowing a smooth gliding between the notes. Some new playing techniques were also introduced so that the quality of sound and melodies could be retained for longer period of time.

He also got a chance to collaborate with some of the greatest musicians of all times such as Zakir Hussain, Hariprasad Chaurasia etc. The credit for some of the finest compositions for hindi films like “Darr”, “Silsila”, “Lamhe” also goes to Pandit Shiv. Some of the famous albums composed by Pandit ShivKumar are Call of the Valley, Sampradaya, Elements: Water, Music of the Mountains, Megh Malhar.

Time and again he has been honored for his outstanding achievements with some of the renowned Indian awards which include Padma Shree, Padma Vibhushan, Sangeet Natak Academy Award, Honorary Doctorate from the University of Jammu, Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan Award, Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar, Honorary citizenship of the city of Baltimore, USA.

May this legendary artist be blessed with a long and prosperous life ahead and we hope that he will provide us with many more mesmerizing performances and compositions in future.
