Ustad Amjad Ali Khan born on Oct 9, 1945 is one of the most popular Sarod player. He is a dignified Indian musician and composer and belongs to the sixth generation of a family who invented Sarods. He has great fan following in all parts of the world.

He was initially named Masoom Ali Khan when he was born in Gwalior, to Hafiz Ali Khan and Rahat Jahan. His father, Hafiz was a renowned musician in the court of Gwalior. He did his education at his home only and was taught music by his father. He was also lucky to have the guidance of Miyan Tansen( the greatest musician of all times). At the young age of 12, he gave his first solo performance.

He is married to Subhalakshmi, a Bharatanatyam dancer and blessed with two sons Amaan and Ayaan. Both the sons are famous musicians and they are commonly seen performing with their father.

Amjad Ali has passion for the instrument, Sarod and he gave a new perception to the same by creating new innovative ragas yet keeping the tradition alive. Some of the beautiful melodies created by him include Priyadarshini, Kamalashree, Kiran Ranjani, Haripriya Kanada, Shivanjali, Shyam Shri, Suhag Bhairav, Lalit Dhwani, Amiri Todi, Jawahar Manjari, Bapukauns etc.

He is the first North-Indian to perform at the saint musician’s Thiruvaiyur shrine in honor of Thyagaraja. He had got the opportunity to perform at various parts of the world such as Pakistan, China, New Zealand, London, Rome, USA, Moscow, Germany, Japan etc.  One of his greatest achievements is Ekharataans complex high speed staccato passages, which is found tedious by most of the Sarod players.

Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan Memorial Society was founded by him in 1977 in the memory of his father. This society annually conducts concerts and the best musicians from all over the world are awarded with Hafiz Ali Khan Award. He presently stays in Delhi with his family and their Gwalior home acts as a center for learning music.

He has been honored with many prestigious awards: Padma Shri Award, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Padma Bhushan Award, Honorary Citizen of Houston, Texas, and Nashville, Tennessee, Padma Vibhushan Award, Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize, Honorary Citizen of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Also April 20 is celebrated as Amjad Ali Khan Day in Massachusetts.
