Ustad Zakir Hussain

Ustad Zakir Hussain son of renowned tabla player Ustad Allah Rakha and was born on March 9, 1951. He is popularly known as “Tabla Maestro” all over the world. He showed much interest in tabla since his childhood and just at the age of 12 and he gained International fame by his marvellous performances at the concerts.

He passed his high school with St. Michael’s High School in Mahim and completed his graduation from St. Xaviers, Mumbai. By his twenties, he had become so famous that he visited USA frequently and performed for around 150 concerts in a year.

He is married to Italian-American Kathak Dancer, Antonia Minnecola who was also her manager for some period of time. Zakir is blessed with two talented daughters namely Anisa Qureshi and Isabella Qureshi out of which Anisa is trying in video production and filmmaking and Isabella is studying Dance Major.

Since his childhood, Ustad Zakir has fortunately got a chance to perform with many renowned artists and musicians from all over the world. Besides India, he has done his compositions for many of the English movies like Apocalypse Now, In Custody, Little Buddha, The Mystic Masseur etc. He has also acted in one of the best documentary named “The Speaking Hand: Zakir Hussain and the Art of the Indian Drum” which was released in the year 2003 but it did not gain much popularity due to lack of audience response and hence it was also not printed in the DVD formats.

He has performed with many artists and has produced finest examples of fusion which is very well evident from his relations with a well known band ‘Beatles’. In the year 1971, he worked with an American psychedelic band called “Shanti”. He along with John McLaughlin, L. Shankar, T.H. “Vikku” Vinayakram and R. Raghavan did his compositions and formed a band called “Shakti” in 1975 which was unfortunately unbanded in late 70’s.

The Band was formed again with a new name “Remember Shakti” and with new members. Some of the popular albums of the band are Saturday Night in Bombay, The Believer and 38th Montreux Jazz Festival etc.

His first solo album called “Making Music” was released in the year 1987 and is regarded as one of the finest examples of East-West Fusion Albums. He is the youngest percussionist who has achieved the Padma Shree Award in the year 1988. He is also blessed with the esteemed respect in the field of traditional arts by achieving National Heritage Fellowship (1999) in US. His achievements also includes Grammy for the creation and production of album “Planet Drum” along with Mickey Hart.

Ustad Zakir has made a memorable mark in the field of Indian Music and has also received an International acclaim. May he be blessed with a marvellous future ahead and reach the Zenith of Success.

Some of the other Notable tabla players are: Ustad Alla Rakha, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, Pandit Kishen Maharaj, Ustad Tari Khan,  Pandit Sharda Sahai and Ustad Tafo Khan etc.
